Talofa lava and welcome to English.

A key element of this course will be completing the Personal Reading Achievement Standard.  For this you will need to read 6  texts, 4 of which must be written and up to 2 of which can be visual or oral texts representing a variety of cultures, genres and genders.  The detail of what is required will be gone through in class and you will have written guides to help you.  The good news is, you have most of the year to do this work.  The bad news is, it can be tempting to leave it all to the last minute – thus risking failure – so the best advice is to make a start as soon as possible. Have a look at the Blogroll to find some websites which may help you find interesting reads.

You could even write a reading response to this TED Talk about injustice. (Oral Text Category)

Week 8-10 – Literature study – Apirana Taylor poetry and prose (2.2, 2.3)

  •  Theme:  Against the Odds

Where do we find the strength to survive?  How does hope give us the will to persevere in times of adversity?

Inside ourselves?

In others – whanau, friends, strangers?

Mental?

Physical?

Our culture?

Our education?

These are questions you will be challenged to think about this year.  They give us a line of inquiry into the ideas many writers and directors would like us to think about.  They also invite us to think about our own attitudes to others and how and why we have developed them.  Do we sometimes need to reconsider our views? As you read and view stories keep these questions in the back of your mind ready to help you find insights into the texts.  It is also useful to think about what is really going on in the world around us and how we feel about the events and people whose stories we read, view and hear.  In reading about the triumphs of others can we help develop our own inner strength? Food for thought….
